400ex start problems ?
I have a 2002 400ex that won't start.. When I hit the Start button the starter spins but it dint crank the motor over.. I changed the brushes in the starter and changed the starter clutch (one way bearing) but still the same thing I'm running out of ideas.. Can somebody help me?
The starter spins perfect like it's supposed to.. It's just the motor that won't crank over. I havent pulled the plug yet but don't the motor have to try and crank over before the plug sparks?
Answer:
When you say it won't crank the engine over, do you mean that the starter just stops spinning or that the starter spins and the engine doesn't turn over?
If the starter spins, engages and stops, it could be a bad starter or a worn battery. You said that you rebuilt it, but it may have a bad stator winding. Go out and buy a guaranteed rebuilt or new starter.
If the starter spins but stops immediately when it engages, you could have a trans problem. Can you bump start or push start the quad? Can you put the bike in gear and get the engine to turn over? An easy way to see if it is your trans is to pull your spark plug. This will make it so you have no compression. Put the quad in gear and then turn the rear wheel or push the bike. The engine should spin or turn over with slight resistance. If you can't push it, then you have a trans problem. If you click it in gear and it won't turn over, you can try rolling it forward and back. If there is something lodged in between your gear teeth or your shifter drum, it may come loose. If it does, do not start your bike! You are going to have to pull the engine, split the cases and repair what ever is broken.
