Machine Shop Training: Beveling with a V-block ATI Mill #10
Machine Shop in Utah - Utah Machine Shop
Machine shop in Utah, Mountain Valley Machine, recently acquired ISO 9001:2008 certification. This elite status is more than just an impressive addition to owner, Todd Williams' resume. Certification to ISO 9001 has taken a lot of effort, time, and expense. Is it worth it?
The real benefit is not in how long it takes for Mountain Valley Machine to realize a profit from this venture. Compliance and formal registration to ISO 9001 really benefits customers most.
• Customers can eliminate much of the "soft costs" of evaluating the whole company for each order because they can have confidence that they will deliver consistent quality and service from one day to the next – or even from one year to the next. Being able to measure against a Standard makes the evaluation process much more efficient for the customer. Many machine shop customers won't even consider a supplier who is not registered to a Standard.
• The intrinsic benefit to complying with and becoming registered to a Quality Management System Standard is that it imposes a "system" on the business. Many small businesses experience a degree of chaos as they begin to grow. They literally get so caught up in the day to day grind of fulfilling orders that they fail to realize which orders returned the highest net profit and, therefore, do not know which orders were really net losses to the organization. Usually, if a business is not chaotic, they don't even begin to consider some way to "improve it". The danger of most chaotic systems is when the owners and managers are so busy putting out fires, they don't have time to recognize how chaotic they are. Certification is a benefit to customers because when an organization is forced to comply to an international Standard like ISO 9001 it forces a focus on a formal process of internal audit and management review which ultimately means higher quality delivered to customers.
• One of the greatest benefits to implementing ISO 9001 is because of it's systemic orientation. This is crucial. Many people wrongly emphasize the importance of the attitude and motivation in the organization. The assumption is that quality can be created if workers are motivated and have the right attitude. While this is certainly a plus to any organization, it doesn't go far enough. Unless you support the right attitude with the right policies, procedures, records, technologies, resources, and structures, you can never achieve the standards of quality required to be competitive in this industry.
Organizations that have been certified/registered to ISO 9001, like machine shop in Utah, Mountain Valley Machine, can provide evidence, a certificate, that they have implemented an effective Business Management System. This tells their customers or potential customers that they are serious about quality and ensuring that their customer's expectations are met.
