drills,upgrading a keyed chuck with a keyless one?
I am looking forward to getting rid of the chuck on my Bosch drill once and for all(I like the drill itself,still as new after 4 years of DIY, it is getting hard for me to keep looking for the allen though.) I have seen those adaptors where you put/fasten them on the keyed chuck and mount the bit on it!I was wondering if I can dismantle the keyed chuck and install a keyless one instead?Is it possible/recommended?
Answer:
Just to add to what everyone else has said, which I agree with. Open up the chuck all the way to get at the screw inside at the bottom. It wil be reverse threaded, meaning to loosen it, act like you're tightening it. Once it's out, put your largest allen wrench that will fit in the chuck and tighten it. Lay the drill on the side of a work bench and hit the allen wrench with a hammer to break the the chuck free as they are usually on there pretty tightly and if you try to just turn the chuck, the motor will turn with it. By hitting the allen wrench sharply it will loosen it without causing the motor to turn.
All that being said, why bother? No keyless chuck holds as tightly as one with a key, though the better ones only need one hand to use because there's an internal locking mechanism to keep the drill motor from spinning. A good keyless chuck is going to cost more than it's worth, it seems. You're not using a drill for a living like many of us are so I'd do like they recommend and attach the key to the cord. Or buy one of those adapters that attach to the existing chuck if it doesn't make the whole thing too long. I've always preferred a shorter drill/driver because I'm often using it in small spaces and they're a lot lighter for all day use, but it doesn't sound like that's an issue for you. Hope that helps.
