What's the cheapest way to sharpen my chisels?
I'm a beginner at wood carving, and I want to know about sharpening. I have a small set of chisels, gouges, and the v tool. They came ground, but need to be honed. A few people have told me some sort of leather buffing wheel is a good way to go. Would some 4000 and 8000 grit Japanese water stones be sufficient for having very sharp chisels. I'm trying to stay somewhat cheap and simple. Thanks.
Answer:
I have a piece of thick glass (that's flat), and I use a guide to hold my chisels and various grits of sand paper to sharpen my chisels. It's a very cheap and effective system, but it works best with flat chisels. If you wanted to try this for your gouges and v tool, you would either have to make up some sort of guide or "free hand" the tools, and take a fine file to the inside to deburr the edge. If you "free hand" the tools, try to maintain a consistant angle....try to follow the original as close as you can.
