Front Mount Mowers vs Mid Mount Mowers
There are many types of lawnmowers on the market today with varying degrees of quality and control. From brand to brand many of the features are the same, cutting blades, a cockpit, steering wheel, grass handling system and so on, but where those features are positioned on the machine tends to change. That placement can effect the overall quality and control you have on your lawn.Walker Zero Turn Mowers has taken a different approach from the traditional style of lawnmowers. They placed the front mount mowers cutting decks where the operator can see instead of directly underneath the cockpit creating. This has a multitude of advantages for the operator and landowner.
Front Mount Mowers
Front mount mowers are quite literal in their naming. Opposed to the mid mount version, front oriented decks are placed in lead of the machine mimicking the layout of a forklift while keeping traditional steering intact.
In the case of a forklift you would never want your forks underneath you. A driver needs them out front so they can see where they are going and what they are doing. Walker has applied the same concept to lawnmowers.
Advantages of Front Mount Mowers
- Careful attention has been given to the deck design. It produces the proper amount of air pressure beneath the housing which in turn provides a smooth flow of material.
- The front mounted mower deck moves independently from the tractor to follow ground contours and minimize turf scalping.
- Walker's precision steering can get it into and out of tight spots and get up close to edges, greatly reducing time spent with a line trimmer.
- The Walker is a better balanced machine that can usually turn faster.
- A Walker operator sits low and can work under overhanging areas, trees and garden fixtures.
- The operators view of the out-front deck enhances control in tight spots and during trimming.
- Walker has one of the best grass catching systems available (Walker Grass Handling System - GHS).
- The Forward Speed Control (FSC) means the driver does not have to hold the steering levers forward while mowing making overall control easier.
- The front-mount deck offers quick changes to as many as 9 sizes and styles of mower decks. It also provides an ideal platform for mounting other attachments such as the Walker 42" Snowblower and the popular Dethatcher.
Mid Mount Mowers
In terms of cutting ability there are some jobs where the standard mid mounted mower works well and even excels. It's just that these instances are few and far between. Mid mount mowers have the cutting area placed directly below the operator making drivers guess at spacing and trim length.
Many lawn mowing machines are used in commercial mowing. If the job is to chop, mow, mulch or straight row mowing on even ground at less than 10mph then mid-mount machines are just what the doctor ordered.
A great example where the traditional mower excels is on a sports field. All baseball diamonds (that aren't astro turf), soccer fields and football greens can collect an excellent cut from a mid mount.
Let us ask you this. Is your lawn flat like a football field? If the answer is no chances are you should look at a Walker Zero Turn Mower.
Before Buying a Mid Mount Mower, Consider This
- Does the mid-mount mower's design provide a professional cut?
- Does the mid-mount get in and out of compact areas with ease?
- Can it reduce your line trimming time?
- Can you mow at the advertised speed of the machine and leave an attractive, weel-groomed lawn?
- Is the steering easy to use, responsive and precise?
- Does the mower lose traction or braking capability when driving downhill or mowing on an angl?
- Does the mid-mount handle grass and trimmed waste without an attachment?
- Can you see all the grass from the seat of the mid-mounted mower?
- Can the mid-mount work year-round with a variety of attachments and implements?
