Can Style And Culture Resist The Onslaught Of Slovenliness?
In matters of culture and style, it must be said a battle revolves around looking good versus looking like a slouch. In fact, it's style versus slovenliness and slovenliness is winning, unfortunately. Around these parts, class and style seems to be drowning amid a sea of baggy pants that hang down to the ground and back tattoos that would make the Illustrated Man run away in fright.
Many fashion experts are at a loss to pinpoint when the move from a sense of style and culture began to turn into a headlong rush into dressing like somebody who grew up on a canal barge first occurred. But if smell is any indication, the loss of the ability to put on a bit of eau de parfum spray in order to avoid at least smelling like week-old fish seems to have completely deserted many people.
Of course, there's always an element of rebellion in any younger generation, and the fact is that many people who use cellular phones look upon wearing something like a men's sport watch as a sign that its wearer has now approached geezer status, if not entered it full-bore. That's because younger people prefer the look of digging around in a pocket and pulling out a cell phone to tell the time rather than just flipping the wrist and gazing at a watch face.
Some of this has to be because today's cellular phones have so much computing power and functionality that they can probably create the T-1000 Terminator from the famous movie, all without our help. Showing off these wonders of modern technology, just to give somebody the time of day, seems to appeal to the futurist in all of us, though it's far easier to just glance at her wrist then to humbly beseech thee great computer gods in the cellular universe for the time of day.
Another area that's been hit hard lately is women's fashions. Put aside, for a moment, the Paris runways, where nearly-anorexic models parade about in getups that would put a space alien to shame, and think about something as simple as women's brown boots. For sure, there are still boots out there being worn by women, though they probably look more like something a US Marine would wear rather than elegant and stylish footwear for a lady.
It might just be the case that a number of people have gone a bit overboard in embracing modern technology and all that it gives us, to the point where they have now rejected anything that smacks of classic timelessness, such as one can find in an expensive wristwatch. Unfortunately, the watch is losing the death match it is engaged in with the cell phone for the right to give the time of day.
Back in the 'old days, ' when a wristwatch was designed to tell the time and maybe give the date, nobody would've thought anything about picking up the telephone and punching in a few numbers to get the time if the wristwatch was not available. However, finding anybody that really remembers those days -- caught up as they are in the idea that they'll soon be traveling on some sort of spaceship to parts unknown -- is probably going to be extremely difficult in the next few years.
