Reel Lawn Mowers
Lawn mower can be simply defined as a device that helps maintain lawns by cutting excessive grass in a fine fashion by employing revolving blades.Lawn mowers help in maintaining even grass length making them an essential component of all lawns.Perfectly mowed grass is indeed a delight to watch.There are two different types of lawn mowers - rotary mowers or reel mowers.Rotary mowers have a blade rotating about the vertical axis. On the other hand, reel mowers comprise of a blade rotating about the horizontal axis.Depending upon the requirement, the gardening market exhibits many different lawn mowers suiting a wide variety of purposes - like mowing giant parks, or golf courses, or even mowing small family lawns.
Reel lawn mowers are also known as cylinder mowers.This is because the blades are mounted on a revolving cylinder known as reel.The reel moves to cut grass when the reel lawn mower is propelled forward either manually or by engine power.Machine powered reel lawn mowers are easily available in the market that help reduce muscular effort of the gardener.
On pushing the reel mower forward, the blades rotate and hence come in sliding contact with a stationary bar that lies parallel to the ground surface. This stationary bar is also known as bed knife considering its action.The bed knife holds up the grass that is of excessive length and requires to be cut.The shearing action of the reel blades eventually cuts out the excessive grass.Taking into account choices of grass length and different requirements of users, the height of reel lawn mowers is generally adjustable in nature.
Reel lawn mowers are put to use more efficiently on large fields and golf courses compared to their counterparts ordinary rotary lawn mowers.This is because reel lawn mowers cut finer grass as compared to any other type of ordinary rotary mowers.The shearing action of the horizontal alignment blades is responsible for such excellent grass mowing attribute.The only mower that can beat reel lawn mowers in grass clippings is mulching rotary mower.
For proper usage of reel lawn mowers, the blade adjustment needs to be considered in advance.The stray grass fragments will hang up on the bed knife and if it is positioned too close to the rotating blades.On the other hand, grass will not cut properly if the rotating blades are too far away from the bed knife.For proper reel adjustment, most reel mowers are equipped with an adjustable bolt or screw.
