Can hepa type air filter cartridges be cleaned in any way?
I have an elderly friend with a room air cleaner that uses a floor model cartridge style/hepa type air filter. Unfortunately, the replacement cartridges can cost over $80. He asked me if he could clean it in any way to extend it's useful life and I admitted my ignorance on the matter.
The actual filter looks to be a paper/cellulose type material enclosed inside a perforated metal bracket with rubber caps at top and bottom (just like an automobile engine air filter). I'm sure the caps are sealed in that the cartridge is designed for disposal once it becomes clogged with particulates, but at the cost of replacing, there is hopefully a way to clean the filter for further use. most likely not... it's been known for a long time that HEPA filter cartridges are really expensive... the factory filter is not going to be cleanable, they could make some washable/reusable ones, but the price would be even greater, and the filtering would go down after each "use"
