Infrared thermometers are very much in vogue today for their versatility and reliability. And the best thing about this temperature gauging instrument is that it can measure temperature without even touching the object. So, it is also popularly known as non-contact thermometer.
How do infrared thermometers work?
It is possible for an infrared thermometer to detect temperature without any direct contact with the subject because unlike traditional thermometers, it gauges the temperature by detecting actual energy levels. Infrared thermometers operate by focusing infrared heat onto a sensor that can convert infrared energy into temperature units. To do this they take into account the regular ambient temperature and then calculate the difference. And the results are almost instant. In fact, you can get the temperature on a small digital readout immediately, which make them useful for comparing multiple temperatures in a particular area.
Where are infrared thermometers used?
The capability of infrared thermometers to gauge temperature in a no contact manner makes it possible to gauge objects that are miles away from them. Today, they are used even in the meteorological department to forecast the weather. You can use one to measure your child's fever temperature, which is a really tiresome issue with the traditional thermometer. And the best part is that they can be used to measure temperature even in moving objects. Infrared thermometers can be effectively used to get the temperature measure inside car engines which is otherwise quite laborious as parts are blocked from contact by other mechanical and hydraulic devices.
What are the different types of infrared thermometers?
Infrared thermometers come in different types as per their functions, shapes and sizes. A pistol shaped thermometer is used to gauge temperatures in very minute areas. These are also ideal for 'those hard to reach places'. On the contrary, for larger areas, and manufacturing units there are a specialized group of these temperature gauging instruments. Then there is another with a video camera that can translate heat signatures into easy to view color coded pictures.
