Understand Principle Ideas Guiding Heat Transfer Engineering

If you want to be certain that your home is efficient in terms of energy use then it is important to understand the concept of heat transfer analysis. Typically, it is the cost of heating our homes that makes up the largest chunk of our annual utility bill. If your property is not kept correctly insulated then the result can be very severe. In these days of financial uncertainty it is important that we take all the steps we can to ensure that we do not waste energy.Pratt and Whitney engineers have the expertise and experience to help.

We are taught even at a young age that heat will flow from hot surfaces to cold. This is all too obvious. We know that a piece of furniture next to a heater will become warmer quicker than those objects that are further away. This concept is referred to simply as heat radiation.

There are other processes involved with heat transfer. Conduction occurs when the heat energy flows through a solid object. If you place a metal poker in a hot fire then the energy will transfer through the metal. This is important to comprehend when it comes to insulating a home. You will need to choose the right type of material for the environment and climate that you live in.

The final type of heat transfer is called convection. Convection results when the heat energy is dissipated by air or water. Convection currents are moving bodies. We can see how the global weather systems use convection to transfer heat and energy around the atmosphere. If you have a fan heater then this will also incorporate the principles of convection. A draughty room will lose heat through convection.

Now we understand a little about how heat is transferred, but how can we take this knowledge and implement it into our homes? Well, we need to understand that heat transfer engineering have dramatically advanced over the last ten years. By choosing the right building materials and insulation you can make changes so that you bring down the amount of heat transferred both inwards and out.

When checking out insulation materials you need to keep your eyes open for a special rating. This is often termed an "R" rating. The greater the number, the more efficient the product will be at slowing down the transfer of heat.

You should always be aware that heat is not just lost through the ceiling. Windows, doors, walls, in fact any physical structure can be changed to minimize the heat flow. Always consider the complete building rather than individual rooms.

It is no use designing a plan to keep your home warm in the winter months but then not consider how to cool the property during hot summer days. The technology from Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne involved with heat transfer fluid has rapidly advanced over the last decade as greater emphasis is placed on energy efficient homes. Apart from the cost benefits there is also the factor that less energy use and wastage will cause less damage to the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How is it that polar ice caps can form on the planet Mercury, whose daylight surface is so hot?

The night-time temperature plummets, so are the days much shorter than the nights. Could this be the reason?

Answer:

Any water on mercury would have evaporated long before the planet formed.
