Hydrogen - The Fuel Of The Future
Dihydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, which constitutes 70 percent of the total mass of the universe. It is the principal element in the solar atmosphere. Giant planets, such as Jupiter and Saturn consist of mainly Hydrogen. Hydrogen forms more compounds than even Carbon. It acts both as an oxidizing and reducing agent.
The position of Hydrogen in the periodic table is uncertain as it shows resemblance with group-1 (alkali metals) and group 18 (halogens) elements. It is the lightest element known. Hydrogen has three isotopes, protium, deuterium and tritium. These three isotopes have different masses. Tritium is radioactive amongst these and emits low energy beta-particles. Allotropes of Hydrogen are ortho hydrogen and para hydrogen.
Hydrogen is commercially produced in various ways. These include:
• Electrolysis of Acidified Water
• Electrolysis of warm Barium Hydroxide solution between Nickel Electrodes
• Bosch Process
• Lane's Process
• Brine Electrolysis Hydrogen is used everywhere in our daily lives.
Its uses include:
• Hydrogenation of Oils
• Use in fuel cells
• Used as a reducing agent
• In Haber's Process
• As Rocket Fuel
• In Preparation of Synthetic Petrol
Important compounds of Hydrogen include Water, Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydrides (ionic, covalent, metallic or polymeric). Water is polar in nature, and exists in the liquid state at room temperature. Water can be classified as HARD or SOFT water based on whether it lathers soap or not, if it does, it is soft water, else it is hard water. Hardness can be temporary or permanent based on the presence of Magnesium/Calcium hydrogen carbonates OR their sulphates/chlorides) Hydrogen Peroxide is used as a germicide, antiseptic, preservative, bleaching agent and antichlor. Thirty Percent Hydrogen Peroxide is known as Perhydrol.
Hydrogen is an environmentally clean fuel. It has highest calorific value and hence is a better fuel that any other. This proposal is refereed as ‘Hydrogen Economy'. Very high efficiency is obtained when Hydrogen is used to produce electricity in fuel cells. Hydrogen is highly efficient and doesn't produce green house enhancing gases; cars based on hydrogen fuel (electric cars) are already being manufactured and are driven my people around the world. Hyrdogen is the fuel of the future.
