3 Things EMTs Should Remember
EMS (Emergency Medical Service) is a very challenging career. It can me stressful, exciting, and scary. However there are a few things we can do to help us stay on top of our game. This career field is very young and is constantly growing. It's important for us as medical professionals and public servants to constantly be looking for ways to improve our image with in the community. Following and implying these few principals will ensure that we as professionals are providing the most positive and beneficial care possible.
This is not a job it's a way of life!
For some reason EMT'S and Paramedics can become a little complaisant for some reason. We must remember that this profession is not just any profession. It's a calling! You must be passionate, caring, sympathetic, and professional at all times! The bottom line is IF YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR CAREER CHOICE YOU NEED TO FIND ANOTHER ONE! Ems is not a place for complacency! We can not allow our personal problems, petty differences, and personal views affect the quality of patient care we provide. The members of the community deserve better and your department as well as yourself should except noting less then perfection! Although there will be mistakes it's important for you to understand that most mistakes can be prevented starting with the right attitude.
Team Work!
Arguably the most desirable quality for EMS personnel is Team Work! Being a team player will not only guarantee better patient care but it will also help working relationship with your coworkers. In an emergency we all know things can be crazy! Events happen so quickly and things go from 0-60 in milliseconds. It's important for ems personnel to keep cool heads and work together as a team. Working together as one with the common goal of doing whats best for the patient will ensure that egos are left at the door and will not get in the way of patient care.
Treat every patient as an individual!
Any one who has been in the medical field any time at all knows that many medical conditions have the same signs and symptoms, but often times are treated differently. When it comes to our patients we should apply the same concept and remember that although our patients may present with the same signs and symptoms they to need to be treated differently. It's important to remember that our patients are in fact individuals and all have different personalities, needs, and want's. If we remember to treat our patients as individuals and practice molding our skills to satisfy there specific needs not only will the patient be better served but we will become better professionals.
In closing following these 3 suggestions are sure to improve your patient care and working relationships with your community and coworkers. I encourage everyone in the EMS Proffession to contently look for way to improve the service that you and your department provides to the members of the community. Not only does this help you and your agency but also improves the overall ems system nationwide.
