An Ideal Therapy That You Should Consider for Foot Drop
Foot drop is a condition that prevents the foot from lifting, making it difficult to walk due to the instability it causes. Foot drop is caused by a partial leg paralysis, and it often occurs in individuals with upper motor neuron injury, such as: stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Temporary foot drop may occur as a result of sitting with your legs crossed for a long time, experienced as your foot "falling asleep."
The emotional and physical exhaustion brought about by real foot drop may be distressing; however, treatment of foot drop can be achieved by treating the underlying condition. If the condition is permanent, then the best therapies and treatments would focus on improving mobility. Therefore, the first step to treatment of foot drop is to determine the underlying condition and focus all attention on that.
Initial treatment has mainly been focused on alleviating discomfort and attempting to restore mobility through shoe inserts or leg braces known as ankle-foot orthotics (AFO). These are often merged with exercises and physical therapy so as to improve the strength of the leg and foot. The most effective therapy, though, is through stimulating the nerve with a small electrical device, either strapped or implanted in the leg. The Ness L300 Foot Drop System from Bioness is a non-invasive device which helps in gaining increased mobility and improved balance. This device uses low-level electrical stimulation to send a message to the nerves which control the muscles that lift the foot.

This device is used by physical therapists to help patients whose foot drop results from a stroke. The therapist sets the system to assist the patient with foot drop rehabilitation exercises. The L300 is wrapped beneath the knee, with a small unit at the ankle, and a hand-held remote control unit to adjust the level of stimulation for comfort. Early use after a stroke helps rehabilitation advance more quickly. Then, at home and out in the community, the patient uses it to get around, performing daily activities where walking is required.
