5 Simple Steps To Check For Air Leaks At Home

In this article, I will explain how to save between 5 and 30 percent from your heating and air-conditioning bill simply by plugging up air leaks. Gas leaks should be checked for, as well, as gas system leaks are dangerous and costly. These leaks can be detected by smell. If you do smell gas, call a qualified service technician from your utility company as soon as possible.

A pressure test can help you pinpoint those leaks and seal them off. Try to perform this test during a time when the outside temperature is low but the house is warm. Follow the 5 steps below to check for air leaks at your home.

1. To begin sealing your home, close all windows and doors. Make sure to close any skylights or vents. Next turn off heating and cooling sources including the fireplace, furnaces, gas water heaters, etc. Close the fireplace damper tightly. Turn off your HVAC system.

2. Turn on all the exhaust fans in your house (normally located in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms). If you don't have any exhaust fans, aim a portable fan at a single open window and turn it on. Quickly check for any air draft entering from the fireplace. If air is flowing back into the house it will cause an unpleasant odor. Also, this indicates that heat may be escaping through the chimney. This should be fixed as a first step towards energy efficiency.

3. With the fans on your house is depressurized, so leaks may be more apparent. Wet a finger and run it around windows, electrical outlets, switches, doors, molding interfaces, attic hatches, basement hatches, and so on. This will allow you to feel a leak more easily, especially if it's cold outside. Another way to check for leaks is with a stick of incense or a candle. Smoke fluctuation or flickering of the flame will indicate a leak.

4. Check for leaks in overhead lights using a ladder or chair. Such leaks are very common, but a little more difficult to fix without good attic access.

5. Once leaks have been discovered there are a variety of ways to fix them. Caulking works well, but it can look unappealing. There is clear caulk that is less noticeable. Leaks can often be fixed from the outside, where caulking is more acceptable.

The best way to eliminate drafts is from both sides. You may be able to seal off some areas with duct tape. Buy a caulking gun that has a pressure relief gasket, otherwise the caulk will continue to flow when after the trigger has been released.

Expandable insulation is another option that works really well, but beware; it is almost impossible to remove once it has set. Make sure the area around the leak (carpet, wallpaper, etc) is well covered. If you are unfamiliar with this product practicing spraying it before your first use.

Be sure to turn off all electricity in the house before attempting to fix anything electrical such as a switch or outlet. Find the main circuit breaker and flip the switch to the off position.

Apart from check for air leaks at home, there are many other ways to reduce your home energy consumption. If you are good with tools, you can even build an alternative energy generator by either utilizing magnetism or the earth's radiant energy.
